Top 6 Day Trips from Copenhagen

Staying in Copenhagen, but looking for something to do outside the city? Read on to learn about the top 6 day trips in Copenhagen.

There are plenty of great reasons why tourism is on the rise in Denmark. And the Danish capital, Copenhagen, is certainly at the heart of it all.

The city boasts some of the most picturesque, waterfront sights in all Scandinavia. There's plenty of fun things to do, good food to eat, and good people to talk to.

But Copenhagen is not the entirety of Denmark. And if you're looking for the true Danish experience, it's important to venture out of the capital.

Luckily, there are plenty of day trips from Copenhagen to choose from. There's also no scarcity of activities and sights to soak in all within short reach of the capital.

What are the best and easiest Copenhagen day trips you can plan? Here are 6 of the best day trips you can enjoy right outside the Danish capital!

1. Helsingor

Only 50 kilometers northeast of Copenhagen is the quaint city of Helsingor. It's a small port city that sits right along the edge of the Oresund strait, which divides Denmark and Sweden. The city is about an hour drive or train ride from the capital.

With plenty of architecture to see, it's the perfect destination if you want to picnic and frolic. But if you do visit Elsinore (which is the English way of pronouncing the city), be sure to visit Kronborg Castle.

The exquisite Kronborg Castle is among the most prominent castles in Northern Europe. William Shakespeare made Kronborg the setting for Hamlet. And even if you're not a fan of Shakespeare, visiting Kronborg is one of the best things to do in Denmark.

Train tickets from Copenhagen to Elsinore are around 11 euros one way. The trains run all night long, making it possible to return to Copenhagen at any hour of your choosing.

2. Hillerod

Another great city to visit that's north of Copenhagen is Hillerod. It's part of New Zealand, the upper portion of the Zealand Island. Otherwise known as the Danish Riviera.

In Hillerod, you'll find much more greenery and woodlands to absorb than you will in Helsingor. If you make Hillerod one of your Copenhagen day trips, be sure to see Fredriksborg Palace.

The gardens of Fredriksborg Palace are as whimsical as they are beautiful. Few gardens in the world compare. The gorgeous Baroque palace serves as the picturesque backdrop. And there's also the art museum you can visit on the premises - all in one go.

Hillerod is about an hour drive or train ride from Copenhagen. It's only 30 minutes from Helsingor, as well, making it possible to visit both cities in the same day.

3. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Visiting the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is one of the more unique things to do in Denmark. Located just south of Helsingor, the museum is among the finest in all Europe.

Louisiana is home to contemporary artwork made within the last 75 years. You'll find pieces made by Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Yves Klein.

There's a concert hall where performers and lecturers take the stage. The museum also hosts several exhibitions throughout the year. Not to mention, the annual literature festival that attracts thousands each year.

There's something for everybody at Louisiana. It's not uncommon for people to plan their Copenhagen trip around Louisiana. Before booking your trip, make sure to peruse the museum's itinerary and exhibitions.

4. Mon

About 120 kilometers southeast of Copenhagen is the island of Mon. The island provides some of the most spectacular sights in all Denmark. And if you decide to make the 3-hour round trip journey, be sure to visit the Cliffs of Moen.

The Mons Klint (Cliffs of Moen) span about 6 kilometers along the Baltic Sea. Visiting the Cliffs of Moen is one of the best things to do in Denmark especially if you love the outdoors.

Not only will you get to see the breathtaking, dramatic cliff drops down to the shoreline of the Baltic Sea. You'll also get to soak in plenty of fresh woods and ponds. Mons Klint is also known for its peculiar chalky soil, so you'll get to see rare plants and flora along the way.

It takes a little less than 2 hours to travel to the island of Mon by car. There are also trains from Copenhagen you can take. After spending the day along the cliffs, be sure to grab a meal in the quaint little town of Stege.

5. Lolland

Visiting the island of Lolland is one of the longer day trips from Copenhagen. It's about a 2-hour drive one way to the large island. But it's a trip worth taking, especially if you're looking to see the Danish countryside.

Lolland offers as many picturesque views as the neighboring island of Mon. But unlike the Cliffs of Moen, Lolland is flatter. Still, there's equally as much natural beauty to soak in, as well as architecture and things to do.

The main attraction in Lolland is Knuthenborg Safari Park. So, if you're visiting Denmark in the spring or summer, it's definitely worth checking out for a day. There's also plenty of sandy beaches, boardwalks, and piers to explore.

To get to Lolland from Copenhagen, you'll have to take a ferry off Rodbyhavn Harbor. This certainly makes the journey longer. But you'll get to see the Great Belt Bridge and the cities of Funen and Jutland along the way.

6. Dragor

Are you looking for Copenhagen day trips that are a little closer to the center of the capital? If so, the pretty little town of Dragor is perfect for shorter day trips, especially in the summer!

Dragor is a quaint little getaway from the hustle and bustle of Copenhagen. In the summertime, you can choose from a number of music and art festivals. Not to mention, there's plenty of markets to shop at year-round.

Dragor is less than 30 minutes from Copenhagen by car. But you can also travel by bus or train.
